Cargo-cult in Tanna
Cargo cults appeared in different Pacific islands during and after the second world war, when a diversity of new goods appeared with the arrival of American forces and cargo ships in the region. In some local communities, this sudden change was seen as magic and they developed a belief system in which praying for the arrival of the next cargo and imitating the behaviors of the outsiders would magically bring them these new goods again and again. Most Pacific Cargo cults died out with the time but in Tanna, some of them are still existing. The most widespread is the cult of John Frum (=John from America), who is a magical figure inspired most probably by an American who arrived here in the 30s-40s. In the John Frum villages, it is believed, that if they conduct ceremonies dressed up and marching like American soldiers and if they pray to John Frum, he will return some of them and bring them valuable goods again. From the cargo cult villages, we visited Namakara, which is situated on the slopes of Yasur Volcano, and joined shortly for their ceremony which is held Friday evenings. Another interesting cult, where Prince Philipp of England was considered a God is spread in Yakel and Yaohnanen villages on the other side of the island.
