Vanuatu

As remote as you can get!

I spent 6 weeks in Vanuatu and even that was too short to explore the country properly as the remote archipelago consists of 83 islands of which 65 are inhabited! During my time there I visited 4 bigger islands: Efate, Pentecost,  Espiritu Santo and Tanna.

Moving around the archipelago can be a challenge, so for island-hopping you have to prepare with a good amount of extra time and patience. Flights between the islands are notoriously unreliable and get delayed or cancelled on a regular basis. For the next ferry, you often have to wait at least a couple of days.  And the cargo ships? The starting time depends on how fast they get fully loaded and what time the captain decides to leave.

Be prepared for remoteness! Around Port Vila, Luganville, and some resorts you find good infrastructure, but once you leave these areas, even on the bigger islands, it can turn into a challenge to find a shop, electricity to charge your phone, internet, or a place to sleep. In rural areas, Ni-Vanuatu people are amazingly welcoming, and you often get invited into local homes, but I absolutely recommend carrying a tent if you would like to explore off-the-beaten-track places. And be prepared for strikingly high prices! In Vanuatu, all the goods apart from locally produced vegetables are imported, so a simple supermarket shopping can easily become more expensive, than what it would be anywhere in Western Europe.

Island-hopping in Vanuatu!

Efate

The capital, Port Vila is situated in Efate making it the most urbanized island with the best infrastructure. Port Vila is a good starting point to get to know the country and its traditions and it serves also as a transport hub to reach the peripheral islands.

Pentecost

The home of “land diving”, a traditional rite that inspired bungee jumping. This island is truly remote with infrastructure still in baby-shoes and it is a perfect place, if you would like to learn more about traditional lifestyle.

Tanna

Would you like to stand at the crater of an active volcano, which is spitting out lava just in front of you? If yes, Tanna is your place! Apart from giving home to Yasur Volcano, the island is also rich in cultural sights including the “Cargo Cult” villages

Espiritu Santo

The biggest and most diverse island! Santo has incredible beaches, blue holes, coral reefs, amazing history and the more adventurous can visit remote “Kastom villages” in the south and central part of the island.

Malária Vanuatuban

In the last 10-15 years the cases of malaria in Vanuatu decreased rapidly, but it is a still significant problem in some areas. In the following article, I’m giving you suggestions on which are the islands, where it would be recommended to take malaria prophylaxis.
